Apps Are Crashing, Not Opening – Google

It’s a fairly common issue that your Google Pixel may not be opening apps or the apps aren’t loading when you do open them. There can be a few common reasons why and most of them are pretty easy to fix most of the time.

The Problem: Apps Aren’t Opening On Google Pixel

When this issue occurs it will appear the your phone recognizes that you touched the app most of the time and the app will blink (for lack of a better word) but the app just doesn’t open. For this issue you’ll want to soft reset/force restart the phone.

The Fix

Soft Reset/Force Restart

If your Google Pixel screen is frozen the typical fix is restarting the phone. You won’t be able to reset the phone manually if the phone screen is frozen So you’ll have to soft reset/force restart the phone. Even if it’s not frozen a force restart could still be a good option. To do this:

  • On your Pixel, hold the volume up button and the power button simultaneously for about 7 seconds

If your phone screen is still frozen after this then you might want to take it to your local repair center or wireless store to see if a tech can run diagnostics on the phone but a soft reset/force restart will usually fix that issue.

Update Software And Applications

If your Google Pixel’s software and your App software isn’t up to date or if one is and one isn’t then you want to make sure you do both. The reason this happens is because apps will release software versions that are compatible with recent Android OS (Operating System) updates and vice versa. So if they’re both not compatible with each other then the app won’t load or won’t function properly.

  • To Update Your Android OS Software
    • To see if you’re Pixel’s software is updated to the most recent AOS version, go into your settings and update the software. You can view that information here.
  • To Update Your Apps
    • To update your apps and keep them updated regularly, it is recommended that you turn on automatic updates in your Play Store settings. To do this:
      • Open up the Play Store App then tap on Your Profile Icon at the top right hand corner of the screen to the right of the search bar.
      • Then tap on Settings > Network Preferences > Auto Update Apps.
      • Then choose whether you want apps to download over Wi-Fi or over any network.
    • You can also update your apps manually by:
      • Open up the Play Store App then tap on Your Profile Icon at the top right hand corner of the screen to the right of the search bar.
      • Then tap on Manage Apps & Device.
      • Then where it says Updates Available, tap on Update All to update all apps or See Details to choose which apps to update.

The Problem: Apps Aren’t Loading/ Apps Are Offline

This problem usually looks like the app is consistently trying to load and never does or you open the app and you see an error message that it’s offline.

The Fix

Soft Reset/Force Restart

It never hurts to soft reset your phone. This is the quickest fix for most problems and your phone just might need a refresher. To soft reset your device scroll to the top of this page or click here.

Check Your Network Connections

Most Apps use Mobile Data and Wi-Fi to open so if the app isn’t loading and/or you’re getting a screen that says you’re offline. Check to make sure that your phone has a good connection to Mobile Data or Wi-Fi. To do this:

  • Go into your settings and make sure your Mobile Data and/or Wi-Fi is on and connected.
  • If your Mobile Data and Wi-Fi are both on and connected and it’s still not connecting to a network then try to reset the network settings Wi-Fi, Mobile, And Bluetooth from Here.
Update Software And Applications
  • Make sure your Android Operating System software is up to date and the apps on your phone are updated to the most recent software versions from Here.

Close Out Unused Apps

With out even realizing it you could have a lot of apps running in the background. If you have too many apps open then your phone can reach its RAMs maximum capacity. Pixels are built to have the capacity to keep multiple apps running at once similarly to iPhone, however, when your Pixel is running too many apps, it could still be a reason why your phone is running slower depending on what apps you’re using. Each app in the background is competing for space on the phone.

Uninstall and Reinstall The Apps

Try to uninstall the applications then reinstall them from the Play Store. You don’t need to worry about losing information on the majority of apps because all of the information is stored on the apps servers.

Still Not Working?

If this still doesn’t fix the problem, it could be that your Google Pixel has a damaged screen or an issue with the SIM card or the error is coming from a network issue from the account and data plan you have with your wireless carrier or your internet provider. Call them or go to a store to see if you can get a tech to look at your phone and your account.
