iPhone Set Up

Make sure your new phone is charged and your old phone as well if you want to transfer your information. Then hold the power button on the side of your new iPhone to turn it on to get started.

Note: If you intend to transfer data from an old iPhone I recommend taking off your Face ID/Touch ID and passcode from your old phone before you start. It makes it easier to transfer data so you don’t continuously have to type in your passcode.

Lets Get Started

When your new iPhone first turns on you’ll see the word “Hello” alternate between different languages.

  • Once it turns on, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and the first screen you’ll see is where you will choose the system language for the phone.
  • Once you choose the language you’ll then choose your country or region that you are currently in. Preferably choose the region you live in and will be living in the majority of the time.

Quick Start

The next screen will be the quick start screen. Once on this screen, if your previous phone was also an iPhone keep your old phone next to you with bluetooth and Wi-Fi on and you’ll be able to set up your new iPhone using your old one.

  • You’ll first see a pop up on your old iPhone and you can tap on continue and follow the prompts on both iPhone screens.
  • It will have you scan your new iPhone with your old iPhone then you’ll tap continue on your old iPhone and follow the prompts on your new iPhone.

Set Up Manually

You can also tap on Set Up Manually at the bottom of the screen for now and you will still have the option to set up your new iPhone and transfer your data exactly how you would with the quick start option in a few screens.

Written And Spoken Language

Note: Depending on the model of your new iPhone this screen may not appear.

Depending on the language and region you chose, you’ll see commonly written and spoken languages in your region. If you’d like you can add or change languages from this screen for your preferred language and your keyboard. If everything looks good you can go ahead and tap on Continue to go to the next screen.

Choose A Wi-Fi Network

On the next screen you’ll want to choose a Wi-Fi network to connect to. You could skip this part but if your iPhone isn’t activated yet and you want to transfer data from your old phone then you’ll definitely want to connect to a Wi-Fi network. If you intend to transfer information from your old phone you’ll want to make sure both phones are connected to the same Wi-Fi and you have your bluetooth turned on on the old phone. Once you select the Wi-Fi network and type in the password, your iPhone will connect automatically and take you to the next screen.

Data & Privacy

On this screen you will have the option to Learn More about Apples Data & Privacy policies. If you would like to find out more later or you’ve read about it then you can tap on Continue to navigate to the next screen.

Face ID/ Touch ID

On this screen you will have the option to set up your Face ID if your new phone is an iPhone with Face ID or set up Touch ID if your new iPhone has a home button.

  • If you want to set up Face/Touch ID now, tap on Continue and follow the on screen instructions.
  • If you would like to finish setting up you iPhone first then tap on Set Up Later.
  • You can also tap on About Face ID & Privacy if you want to know how your Face ID data will be used.

Note: While it makes the set up process go slightly faster if you wait until you are at the front of the phone to set up Face ID/Touch ID and Passcode, it is highly recommended that your use both.

Create A Passcode

On the next screen you will be prompted to create a passcode. You can choose between:

  • Alphanumeric Code (highest security)
  • Custom Numeric Code (high security)
  • 6-Digit Code (medium security)
  • 4-Digit Code (low security)
  • Don’t Use Passcode – This option is recommended for a faster set up but it is highly recommended that you set up a passcode when you’re done

Apps & Data

If you want to transfer your data from your old phone to your new phone you’ll want to choose one of these options depending on your situation.

  • Restore From iCloud Backup
    • If you’re going to choose this option you want to make sure that your old iPhone has been fully backed up to iCloud. Your iPhone can only be backed up if you chose to purchase iCloud storage. This is a great option if your old iPhone is backed up and you don’t currently have it with you or it was lost or stolen.
  • Restore from MAC or PC
    • If you regularly upload your data to a computer and it’s not stored on your old phone or you have a computer with all of your information and you don’t have your old phone, this would be a good option for you.
  • Transfer Directly From iPhone
    • You’ll want to choose this option if you don’t have your old iPhone backed up to iCloud and you have your old device with you. However, even if you do have an iCloud back up this is still a good option to transfer your data.
  • Move Data From Android
    • If your old phone isn’t an iPhone then you’ll want to choose this option. On your android device, go to the Play Store and download the Move To iOS app. Once the app is installed on your android device, launch the app on your old phone and continue through the prompts on both of your phones.
  • Don’t Transfer Apps And Data
    • If you’re starting fresh and you don’t have data to transfer you’ll want to choose this option. If you do want to transfer data and you want to do it later then it’s better that you don’t set up your new iPhone until later because once you’re past this screen.

Apple ID

On the next screen you will be asked to put in your Apple ID and password.

  • Type in your Apple ID email.
  • Then type in your Apple ID password.
  • After you’ve done both of these, click on Next in the top right hand corner.
  • You will then be sent a 6-digit verification code.
  • Type in the code and you will be brought to the next screen.

If you don’t remember it, either change your password on your old iPhone before you enter the information here or wait until your new iPhone is activated with your phone number so you can reset it.

Whether you remember your password or not you will either want to have your old iPhone with you or you will want to have your new iPhone activated with your phone number because either way your old iPhone will send a one time 6-digit verification code to either your old iPhone and/or your phone number.

You can also select Forgot Password Or Don’t Have An Apple ID to create and Apple ID if this is your first time using an iPhone.

Note: Your Apple ID and Password and the email you use for your Apple ID and password are the two most important passwords to remember. If you ever get locked out of your phone or it’s lost or stolen. It will save you a lot of heartbreak and headache to remember these.

Terms And Conditions

You will then be brought to the Terms And Conditions screen. The thing nobody reads but we all have to agree too. You may read it if you’d like then tap on Agree in the bottom right hand corner.

Make This Your New iPhone

You may select to not transfer previous settings on your old iPhone if you’d like but if you just tap on Continue on this screen your new iPhone will be and identical carbon-copy of your old iPhone.

Keep Your iPhone Up To Date

You’ll just want to click Continue on this screen as well. It’s always a good idea to keep your software up to date.

Location Services

For location services it is up to you if you want to enable or disable location services on this screen. Just know that some features like Maps, Location Sharing, Location based searches, and some other features will not work if you have all location based services disabled. You could also adjust which apps can use your location after you finish setting up your phone. For more information on iPhone’s Location Services, click on the link.

Set Up Mobile Service

This screen may actually pop up after you set up Wi-Fi in the beginning of the set up process if your ESIM has previously been activated. You can transfer your service from your old iPhone or you can scan a QR code from your Wireless Service Provider.

You can also tap on Set Up Later In Settings if you just want to finish setting up your iPhone and have your Wireless Carrier set up service on your phone at a later time.

Screentime

On this screen you will be able to set up your Screen Time which is a helpful tool to monitor the usage on your iPhone. If you would like to set this up later, tap on Set Up Later In Settings and continue to the next screen.

iPhone Analytics

For iPhone analytics I would recommend keeping this off just because there is no reason you need to share your data with Apple. If you do choose to Share With Apple your data will be sent to them and will not be used to identify you or your Apple ID account but for privacy reasons I don’t think it’s necessary. Tap on Don’t Share and continue to the next screen.

Appearance

On this screen you can choose a Light or Dark theme for your iPhone. This one is entirely up to your preference.

Note: Dark theme will consume less battery while you’re using your iPhone.

Display Zoom

Another one that is up to your preference. If you’d like items on your iPhone screen to be larger then choose Zoomed instead of Standard.

Emergency SOS

This is a great feature if you find yourself in an unfortunate emergency situation. No other options here other that Continue. If you want to know more about Emergency SOS Services, click on the link.

Welcome To iPhone!

Once you’ve reached this screen your iPhone is set up. Simply swipe up from the bottom of the screen to continue.
