Find My iPhone

It is highly recommended that you keep Find My iPhone on at all times just incase your phone has been lost or stolen. There are a variety of features on this app that will be useful if either of these events occur.

For More Find My iPhone Settings, click on the link.

Note: For Find My iPhone features to work you must have your Location turned on.

People

From the Find My iPhone App tap on the tab at the bottom of the app screen where it says People, then tap on Start Sharing Location if you haven’t already. Then you can choose which contacts to share your location with. This is a great feature to have for your safety so your friends and family can see where you are at all times.

Devices

To see devices that are signed in with your Apple ID tap on the Devices tab at the bottom of the app screen. You can also add devices by tapping on the Plus Icon (+) at the top of the device list.

If you tap on any of your devices you can see where the device is currently located and how much battery the device has left before it dies.

Note: Even if the device is off you will still be able to track the device however this feature is only on newer iPhone models.

You will also see a few other features to help you find and track your device in the event it is misplaced, lost, or stolen such as:

Play Sound

You can use this feature to play a ringing/beeping sound that will generate from the device you’re looking for. This is a great feature if your phone fell somewhere in your car, behind your bed, or if you maybe left it at a store sitting somewhere.

Directions

If you tap on directions, your phone will navigate you to the location of the device.

Notifications

When notifications are turned on you will be notified when the device is found.

Notify When Left Behind

This can be helpful if you have a device such as an apple watch that will send notifications to you that remind you if you left your phone behind if you navigate too far away from it.

Mark As Lost

When you mark your phone as lost it will activate the following features:

  • Notify When Found
    • You will receive a notification when the location of the device becomes available.
  • Activation Lock
    • Even if the phone is erased there will still be an activation lock on it with your Apple ID so the person who stole it will not be able to activate it even with their own number.
  • Passcode Required
    • Your iPhone cannot be unlocked unless the correct passcode is entered.
  • iPhone Protected
    • Payment cards and other services will be suspended for your safety.
  • Leave A Message
    • You can leave a number and a message to be displayed if someone finds your phone and wants to return it.

Erase Device

If you’re phone has been lost or stolen and it is not recoverable for whatever reason you can erase all of your information off of your phone so nobody can access it. having a passcode on the phone by itself is not always enough of a safety precaution. You’re going to want to completely wipe the devices hard drive remotely to be sure.

Note: The device needs to be connected to a wireless service to be erased whether is be Wi-Fi or cellular data. Because of this, suspending your phone number with your wireless carrier should be the step you take after you erase your device.

Items

To access items, open the Find My iPhone app and tap on the Items Tab at the bottom of the app screen. You can add items in this section that you have air tags for so you can keep track of all of your belongings.

Me

To access the Me section, tap on the Me Tab at the bottom right of the app screen. From here you will see a few other location features.

My Location

This shows which of your devices and connected devices are sharing location.

Share My Location

When this is turned on your location can be shared with other people of your choosing. Turn this off to hide your location from everyone.

My Location Via Satellite

If this is turned on, your phone doesn’t need to be connected to a wireless network such as Wi-Fi or Cellular Data to be able to find it.
