Do Not Disturb – Google Pixel

Do Not Disturb is a great feature to use if you need to focus on a specific task with out the constant distraction of notifications blowing up your phone. To turn it on, tap on Turn On Now then set the following settings:

What Can Interrupt Do Not Disturb

You may need to focus but you still may have certain notifications that you absolutely need to attend to even if you’re busy.

People

In this setting who can choose who can interrupt you while Do Not Disturb is on and who can’t. Even if you have certain messaging and calling apps disabled, these specific people will be able to get through to you.

Messages
  • Starred Contacts
    • Anyone of your contacts who is favorited (starred) will be able to message you when Do Not Disturb is on. To star a contact, select the Settings Icon (the gear symbol) next to Starred Contacts, then click on the Add Contact Icon (the little person with the plus sign) or click on Add Starred Contacts, and tap on the Star next to each contact you want starred.
  • Contacts
    • When you have Contacts checked off, any of your contacts will be able to communicate with you through messaging apps while Do Not Disturb is on, any unknown numbers won’t be able to get through.
  • Priority Conversations
    • When you have priority conversations turned on, only specific conversations that you are having with someone will be able to get through Do Not Disturb. This doesn’t necessarily mean that that specific contact you are having a conversation with will be able to reach you on all platforms unless you have that contact starred or turned on. For example, if you have a text message thread as a priority conversation, that same person won’t be able to get through Do Not Disturb on Facebook Messenger or Instagram.
  • Anyone
    • You may be thinking, if anyone can reach me what’s the point of Do Not Disturb? Well, this only allows anyone to message you, if you have calls off, then nobody will be able to call you, they will only be able to message you.
  • None
    • With None on, nobody will be able to message you while Do Not Disturb is on.
Calls
  • Starred Contacts
    • Anyone of your contacts who is favorited (starred) will be able to call you when Do Not Disturb is on. To star a contact, select the Settings Icon (the gear symbol) next to Starred Contacts, then click on the Add Contact Icon (the little person with the plus sign) or click on Add Starred Contacts, and tap on the Star next to each contact you want starred.
  • Contacts
    • When you have Contacts checked off, any of your contacts will be able to communicate with you through a phone call while Do Not Disturb is on, any unknown numbers won’t be able to get through.
  • Anyone
    • This only allows anyone to call you, if you have messages off, then nobody will be able to message you, they will only be able to call you.
  • None
    • With None on, nobody will be able to call you while Do Not Disturb is on.
  • Allow Repeat Callers
    • In case of an emergency, this setting my be good to have on. Anytime someone calls you more than once in a 15 minute period, the call will go through while Do Not Disturb is on.

Apps

To allow certain apps to get through Do Not Disturb, Simply tap on Add Apps and choose the apps you want to allow from the list.

Alarms and Other Interruptions

 
  • Alarms
    • Any alarms you have set will still be able to get through Do Not Disturb.
  • Media Sounds
    • You’ll be able to hear media sounds from videos you’re watching, games you’re playing, Music you’re listening to and other media apps.
  • Touch Sounds
    • Sounds from your keyboard and other screen clicks will still be heard while Do Not Disturb is on.
  • Reminders
    • Any reminders you have set will be able to get through while Do Not Disturb is on.
  • Calendar Events
    • If you have an event alert scheduled while you have Do Not Disturb on you will still be notified.

General

Schedules

Schedules allows you to customize when Do Not Disturb turns on automatically. You may want it to turn on as soon as you start work, during a scheduled meeting, during a class, while you’re driving and more. You can also customize Do Not Disturb settings for a specific schedule. For example, maybe while your sleep schedule you only want friends and family to be able to contacts you but with your work schedule you silence all contacts so only clients can reach you.

By default you should see three preinstalled schedules that you can customize: Sleeping, Event, and Work. You can use these or create your own schedule and depending on the schedule categories listed below you will have different options to customize a Do Not Disturb schedule.

Event

You can use or customize the current Event Schedule or you can tap on Add More and select Event to add a new event schedule. Then type in the Event Name and click Add, then you’ll be brought to a screen to customize your event.

  • Use Schedule
    • You can turn this schedule on or off by tapping on the switch
  • Edit
    • This will allow you to edit the event name.
  • Delete
    • This option will delete the event.
  • During Events For
    • This is where you will choose a calendar for the events you want to have Do Not Disturb on for if you have more than one Calendar set up.
  • Where Reply Is
    • You will have three options here for different events:
      • Yes, Maybe, Not Replied
      • Yes or Maybe
      • Yes
    • What these options mean is if you want Do Not Disturb on for events you’re going to for sure, you will want to choose Yes. If you want Do Not Disturb to automatically turn on during events that are a confirmed yes or an unconfirmed maybe, the you will want to choose Yes or Maybe. If you want Do Not Disturb scheduled for any event time regardless of confirmation then your will want to select Yes, Maybe, Not Replied.
  • Do Not Disturb Behavior
    • For Do Not Disturb behavior, you can use Do Not Disturb’s default settings that we already went over in the above section or you can leave the default settings that you previously customized the way it is and change the specific Do Not Disturb settings for this event, for a refresher on these settings, scroll to the top of this page or click Here.
    • If you choose to create a custom Do Not Disturb behavior, tap on the settings icon next to Create Custom Settings For This Schedule and you will see the previous options to customize settings with the additional Display Options For Hidden Notifications at the bottom of the screen.
Time

You can also add a specific time daily that you want to have Do Not Disturb on. To add a time, click on Add More, and select Time. Then type in the name of the time, for example, “Sleep”, or “Work”. Then you will be given the following options on the next screen:

  • Use Schedule
    • You can turn this schedule on or off by tapping on the switch
  • Edit
    • This will allow you to edit the event name.
  • Delete
    • This option will delete the event.
  • Days
    • Choose which days you want Do Not Disturb on. For example, you may want days for a sleep time to be 7 days a week but a work time to just be Monday – Friday.
  • Start Time
    • This will be the start time of when Do Not Disturb comes on for the selected days.
  • End Time
    • This will be when Do Not Disturb turns off on the selected days.
  • Alarm Can Override End Time
    • You can have an alarm go off at a certain time of the day and have it turn off Do Not Disturb sooner than you had it scheduled. For example, lets say that your end time for a sleep schedule is at 8:00am every day but three of those days you want to wake up at 6:00am, in this case, Do Not Disturb will end at 6:00am.
  • Do Not Disturb Behavior
    • For Do Not Disturb behavior, you can use Do Not Disturb’s default settings that we already went over in the above section or you can leave the default settings that you previously customized the way it is and change the specific Do Not Disturb settings for this event, for a refresher on these settings, scroll to the top of this page or click Here.
    • If you choose to create a custom Do Not Disturb behavior, tap on the settings icon next to Create Custom Settings For This Schedule and you will see the previous options to customize settings with the additional Display Options For Hidden Notifications at the bottom of the screen.
Driving

You can also choose to silence notifications so you’re not distracted while you’re driving. To turn this setting on click on Add More, then select Driving, then you’ll be brought to another screen and turn on Silence Notifications While Driving

Duration For Quick Settings

This is the amount of time that goes by once you turn on Do Not Disturb. This is only relevant to the default Do Not Disturb settings that you have set and and Do Not Disturb schedules will not be affected. You have three options for the duration of Do Not Disturb:

  • Until You Turn Off
    • Do Not Disturb will stay on until you manually turn it off.
  • For (Hours) – +
    • Do Not Disturb will stay on for a minimum of 15 minutes up to 12 hours before it turns off automatically.
  • Ask Every Time
    • Before Do Not Disturb turns off you will be asked if you want to keep it on or not.

Display Options for Hidden Notifications

From here you can customize how hidden notifications are displayed on your screen while Do Not Disturb is on. You can choose three options:

  • No Sound From Notifications
    • You will still be able to see notifications on your screen you just won’t be alerted with notification sounds.
  • No Visuals or Sound From Notifications
    • Notifications won’t show up on your screen or alert you with any sounds.
  • Custom Restrictions
    • To customize the display option settings, click on the Gear Icon next to Custom and you will see the following options:
  • Don’t Turn On Screen
    • When this is on, the screen will stay off when you receive a notifications. Turn this off if you would like the screen to turn on while in Do Not Disturb.
  • Don’t Wake for Notifications
    • With this setting on, your screen will stay off when you get a notification instead of waking up.
  • Hide Notification Dots On App Icons
    • These are app badges. The little green bubbles in the top right corner of an app icon on your home screen that let you know you got a notification. Turn this on to hide the notification dots.
  • Hide Status Bar Icons at the Top of Screen
    • At the top left part of your phone screen is your status bar and when you get notifications you will see icons pop up. Turn this on to hide these notifications.
  • Don’t Pop Notifications On Screen
    • When this is on you won’t see notification pop ups on your screen.
  • Hide From Pull Down Shade
    • When you drag your finger down form the top of your phone screen you will see all of your notifications. When this setting is on they will disappear from your notification panel.
