iPhone Apps Crashing, Not Opening

It’s a fairly common issue that your iPhone may not be opening apps or the apps aren’t loading when you do open them. There can be a few common reasons why and most of them are pretty easy to fix.

The Problem: Apps Aren’t Opening On iPhone

When this issue occurs it will appear the your iPhone recognizes that you touched the app most of the time and the app will blink (for lack of a better word) but the app just doesn’t open. For this issue you’ll want to soft reset/force restart the phone.

The Fix

Soft Reset/Force Restart

It’s never a bad idea to restart or soft reset your iPhone in the event of most issues you may be having with your iPhone. You could hold volume down and the power button until the power off slider shows up on the screen and you could just swipe it to restart the phone but the soft reset/force restart is a preferable option. To do this:

  • On an iPhone with no home button
    • Press (do not hold) Volume up, Volume down, then hold the power button until your iPhone screen goes black and turns back on. Once you see the Apple symbol on the phone you can then release the power button. Again if you do this don’t drag the slider to turn it off. Continue to hold the power button until the phone shuts off.
  • On an iPhone with a home button
    • Hold the power button and the home button until your iPhone screen goes black and turns back on. Once you see the Apple symbol on the phone you can then release the power button. Again if you do this don’t drag the slider to turn it off. Continue to hold the power button until the phone shuts off.

This will usually fix the issue of apps not opening but if it doesn’t you’ll want to try something else.

Update Software And Applications

If your iPhone software and your App software isn’t up to date or if one is and one isn’t then you want to make sure you do both. The reason this happens is because apps will release software versions that are compatible with recent iOS updates and vice versa. So if they’re both not compatible with each other then the app won’t load or won’t function properly.

  • To Update Your iOs Software
    • To see if you’re iPhones software is updated to the most recent iOS version, go into your settings and update the software. You can view that information here.
  • To Update Your Apps
    • To update your apps and keep them updated regularly, it is recommended that you turn on automatic updates in your app store settings here.
    • You can also go directly to the app store, then once it’s opened you will want to click on the profile icon (it looks like a blue person) at the top right corner of the app screen. Then scroll down and you will have the option to update all your apps or choose which apps you want to update.

The Problem: Apps Aren’t Loading/ Apps Are Offline

This problem usually looks like the app is consistently trying to load and never does or you open the app and you see an error message that there is no network connection.

The Fix

Soft Reset/Force Restart

It never hurts to soft reset your iPhone. This is the quickest fix for most problems and your iPhone just might need a refresher. To soft reset your iPhone scroll to the top of this page or click here.

Check Your Network Connections

Most Apps use Cellular Data and Wi-Fi to open so if the app isn’t loading and/or you’re getting a screen that says you’re offline. Check to make sure that your iPhone has a good connection to Cellular Data or Wi-Fi. To do this:

  • Go into your settings and make sure your Cellular Data and/or Wi-Fi is on and connected.
  • If your Cellular Data and Wi-Fi are both on and connected then try a Network Settings Reset from Here.
Update Software And Applications
  • Make sure your iOS software is up to date and the apps on your iPhone are updated to the most recent software versions from Here.

Close Out Unused Apps

iPhone usually does a pretty good job at running multiple apps in the background at once but I have found that closing out unused apps can fix the issue of other apps not opening or responding. On iPhones this is less likely to be the problem but I have seen it fix the issue countless times.

Uninstall and Reinstall The Apps

Try to uninstall the applications then reinstall them from the app store. You don’t need to worry about losing information on the majority of apps because all of the information is stored on the apps servers.

Still Not Working?

If this still doesn’t fix the problem, it could be that your iPhone has an issue with the SIM card or the error is coming from a network issue from the account and data plan you have with your wireless carrier or your internet provider. Call them or go to a store to see if you can get a tech to look at your phone and your account.
