Ideally you want to set up your phone with a Wi-Fi Network but you can also select to Set up Offline if you aren’t within range of a Wi-Fi network.

Copy Apps & Data

To transfer data from your old phone to your Google Pixel, use a charging cable that is compatible with both phones or Transfer your data wirelessly with bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Note: Transferring data with a charging cable is always faster but not always an option if there is some sort of error or the charging port is damaged on the old phone.

Transfer With a Cable

To transfer with a cable, you will need the following cables below depending on what your old phone is. Once it’s connected, follow the onscreen instructions on both phones to transfer your data.

  • Pixel to Pixel & Android to Pixel
    • You will need a USB-C to USB-C Cable. With older android models you will need a USB-C to Micro-USB to connect both phones.
  • iPhone to Pixel
    • If you’re transferring data from an iPhone you will need a USB-C to Lightning Cable.

Transfer Wirelessly

If you don’t have the right cable to transfer data or the cable option isn’t working, you can transfer data wirelessly. To do this:

  • Make sure both phones stay unlocked (ideally take the passcode and all biometrics off of both phones before you transfer.
  • Make sure both phones are adequately charged.
  • Make sure both phones are connected to Wi-Fi and have Bluetooth turned on.
  • Then follow the onscreen instructions on both phones to continue.

Sign in to Google Account

Make sure you have a Gmail account first then enter your Gmail and Gmail Password on this screen.

Note: If you don’t sign into a Gmail account, you won’t be able to download apps or use some of your Pixels features.

Continue on the old phone if you have two-step verification set up (it is highly recommended that you do)

This will keep your account updated with your chosen phone number. If you don’t want to do this you can choose Skip, but it is helpful if you do. Click on Yes I’m In and continue with the rest of your set up. Then Agree with the terms of service.

It is a good idea to keep up with both phone and app updates because if the two aren’t updated you may have issues with apps and features on the phone not working properly. It is also good because updates contain security patches that help keep your device safe.

Back up Your Device with Google One

Google One is a cloud service that will store all of your personal data in a cloud. Even if you don’t use Google One, it is highly recommended that you use some sort of cloud service. If something happens to your phone and it is lost, stolen, or damaged, you will not be able to retrieve any of your personal information unless it is backed up to a cloud.

Limited Warranty

You can also view Warranty information in Settings > About Phone > Limited Warranty. Select a language and click on Next.

Additional Legal Terms

You have to agree to Googles Terms of Service before continuing. Click on I Accept and continue.

Set A Pin

It is highly recommended that you set up some sort of pin or passcode on your device for security. You can Skip and continue setting up your phone first or you can set up the following passcode options here:

  • Pattern
    • Draw a pattern that unlocks your phone.
  • Pin
    • Set up a pin that is at least four digits (all numbers) the longer your passcode, the more secure your code will be. Just make sure you know for sure that you can remember it.
  • Password
    • The password option will give you the highest level of security on your phone. And remember, length beats complexity but it doesn’t hurt to have both.

Note: It is highly recommended that you keep your pin, pattern, or password written down and kept in a safe place. Keeping any pin or passcode in your phone is not the best option. Especially this one because if you forget it you will not be able to get into your phone to see what it is.

Set Up Fingerprint Unlock

If you opted into setting up a passcode, you will be prompted to set up a Fingerprint to unlock your phone. It is highly recommended you do this. The fingerprint scanner can only unlock with your fingerprint. It is a secure option and it prevents you from having to type in your passcode over and over again especially if it is lengthy and complex.

Note: The only thing about fingerprint is that it could be unlocked if someone puts your finger on the scanner while you’re sleeping.

Set Up FaceUnlock

Face Unlock is also a good biometric option to get into your phone without having to re-enter your password over and over again. The Face ID feature has been upgraded from previous Pixel models. With the Pixel 4, Face unlock would still unlock the phone if you have your eyes closed.

Talk to Google/Google Assistant

Google assistant is a voice activated feature similar to Alexa and Siri. You can set this up to command google to call, send text and activated other features as well. Follow the prompts to allow or deny other Google assistant features.

Check Out Fast With Your Phone

At this point in the set up you can set up a card to use Google Pay for fast contactless payments. Just click Add A New Card and type in your card information, or you can select an existing card your previous phone or Google Account has on file. You can also click on Skip to set this up later.
