Private DNS

A DNS (Domain Name System) maps out web addresses that you search to a set of IP Addresses so that packets are sent over the internet efficiently. So basically in order to view what you’re looking at on the internet, that information needs to be sent to your IP Address so your device can access that information. An analogy would be like ordering a package from somewhere (the website) and then your package (Data) arrives at your house address (IP Address). Now a criminal could find out where the package is being sent from and also know the address it”s being sent to and steal the package and find out where you live. So with a Private DNS, the criminal in this analogy won’t know where the package is going to so they can’t steal your package or find out where you live (your IP Address).

The Private DNS allows you to have custom name servers that you can use with your domain names. The settings on this feature allow you to:

  • Turn in Off
  • Turn it on Automatically
  • Enter your own Private DNS provider hostname

So ideally you want to keep Private DNS on automatic or manually type in your Private DNS provider hostname if you know what this does.

In other words, keep it on and private so you don’t get malware.
