How to Make iPhone Speak Text, Screen, and Typing Feedback

 

Enabling Text-to-Speech

  • VoiceOver: If VoiceOver is turned off, you can still have iPhone speak selected text or the entire screen.
  • Settings: To adjust speech settings, go to Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content.
Speak Selection
  • To hear selected text, click the Speak button.
Speak Screen
  • To hear the entire screen, swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen.
Speech Controller
  • To access Speak Screen and Speak on Touch quickly, use the speech controller.
Highlight Content
  • iPhone can highlight words or sentences as they’re spoken. You can change the highlight color and style in settings.
Typing Feedback
  • You can set typing feedback for the on-screen and external keyboards, including character, word, correction, capitalization, and prediction speaking.
  • To hear typing predictions, turn on Predictive in Settings > General > Keyboards.
Voices & Speaking Rate
  • Choose a voice and dialect in settings.
  • Adjust the speaking rate with the slider.
Pronunciations
  • Set custom pronunciations for specific phrases in settings.
Using Siri
  • To hear the screen with Siri, say “Speak screen”.
Hearing Text, Screen, and Typing Feedback
  • Hear Selected Text: Select text, then click Speak.
  • Hear Entire Screen: Swipe down with two fingers, use the controls to pause or adjust rate.
  • Hear Typing Feedback: Start typing, touch and hold each word to hear typing predictions (when turned on).
