Samsung Keyboard

Languages and types

From here you can change the type of keyboard and if you want to use a different language to text and type with on the Samsung Keyboard, you can change the language settings from here and while you’re using the keyboard you can switch between the two which can come in handy, for example, if you are texting one person in English and one in Chinese that way you don’t have to go all the way back to settings to switch languages.

Go to Settings > General Management > Samsung Keyboard Settings > Languages and Types. From here you can:

Select Keyboard Type

Go to the type of keyboard at the top and switch between Qwerty, Qwertz, Azerty, or 3×4, depending on your texting preferences. 

Manage input languages

Here you can change the keyboard language and toggle between each one on the keyboard

Numbers and Symbols

From here you can switch between Language dependent, Qwerty, or 3×4 depending on your preferences

Language switching method

This will only appear if you have two languages on your keyboard and it gives you the option to have a Language key to switch between languages which will appear as a world icon on the keyboard to the left of the space bar, or you can space bar swipe to change languages. You also have the option to choose both.

Smart Typing

The Samsung Keyboard can help you out with Smart typing options like text and emoji suggestions. For example, emojis and stickers will appear in the toolbar as you type, so you can quickly add them to your messages without searching for them. If you need to adjust these options, navigate to Settings, then tap General management, and then tap Samsung Keyboard settings. From there, tap the switch(es) next to the following options under Smart typing:

Predictive text

While you are texting or typing the keyboard will suggest words for you as a quick way to just tap on the word your keyboard thinks your typing based on how you’ve used it.

Suggest emojis

Similarly to predictive text, your keyboard will suggest emojis

Suggest stickers while typing

Your keyboard will also suggest stickers based on what your typing once you click on this tab in the keyboard settings you will have the option to turn this setting on and beneath it you can set up:

  • Emoji pairs
  • Bitmoji
  • AR Emoji
  • Mojitok
  • Preloaded and downloaded stickers
  • Sticker suggestion method
    • So you can view suggestions above the keyboard or in the predictive text box beneath the keyboard

  • Manage apps
    • If you want some apps to have predictive stickers and some to not have predictive stickers

Auto replace

This will allow your keyboard to replace words for you while you’re typing. To utilize the replacing word you can use the Space bar or the enter key. You can also toggle which languages will have it if you have more than one set up.

Suggest text corrections

If you have grammatical errors in texts your keyboard will underline the word in red. If the word is correct but your keyboard thinks there may be a better alternative it will be underlined in green. You can also choose which apps to allow corrections through manage apps.

Text shortcuts

If you use words or phrases frequently, this can take the hassle out of writing out the entire word or phrase. For example, you could write the word “Address” and your full address will pop up.

More typing options

From here you can set up texting preferences such as:

  • Auto capitalize
  • Auto spacing
  • Double tap space bar to add period
  • Multilanguage test predictions

Style and Layout

Keyboard toolbar

The keyboard tool bar appears underneath the text box as a way to easily access and navigate through emojis, gifs, settings, voice to text, and more.

High Contrast Keyboard

This may come in handy if you’re visually impaired/colorblind or if you would just like to customize the color contrast on your keyboard.

Theme

This customizes the color theme. You have a few options such as Light, Solid light, Dark, and Solid dark.

Mode

This will alter the layout of the keyboard based on your typing preferences. Experiment with different types of keyboard modes to find out which one best suits your texting preferences.

  • Portrait View
    • You can choose between
      • Standard keyboard: This is the normal keyboard view that stretches to the full screen
      • One-handed keyboard: This will shift the keyboard to the right or left side of the screen
      • Floating keyboard: This makes the keyboard a small floating pop up on the screen
         
  • Landscape View
    • When your phone is in landscape view (horizontal) you can choose whether you want to use:
      • Standard keyboard: This is the normal keyboard view that stretches to the full screen
      • Split keyboard: This will split the keyboard in half
      • Floating keyboard: This makes the keyboard a small floating pop up on the screen

Size and transparency

This setting will allow you to customize the keyboard size to your liking. To change this setting simply drag the corners of the keyboard to alter it to your liking. If you want a transparent keyboard you must have floating keyboard enables.

Layout

If you want to change the button and symbol layout You can alternate between default and alternative keyboard layouts however depending on the set language these could be the same. From this setting you can also toggle the number keys and alternative characters. Beneath these settings you will see Spacebar row style to simplify the keyboard rows.

Font size

To change the font size on the keyboard simply drag the slider to your preference

Custom Symbols

If you would like to rearrange the symbols on your keyboard because you want some more accessible than others just click on the symbol you’d like to change, then choose the symbol from your keyboard to replace it.

Swipe, touch and feedback

Keyboard swipe controls

Depending on how you like to use your keyboard you have a few swipe options that you can use.

  • No swipe gestures: This will allow you to run your fingers along the keyboard and wherever you take your finger off is what gets entered into the text box.
  • Swipe to type: This will allow you to swipe your finger from one letter to the next and your keyboard will generate the intended word without having to pick up your finger and type.
  • Cursor control: This setting will allow you to drag your finger across the keyboard like a cursor. Unlike the No swipe gestures setting you will have to click on the letter to input it.
Keyboard touch and hold delay

This will adjust the time of how long it takes your phone to be recognized as you holding your finger on the keyboard instead of just tapping. The default is generally 0.3 seconds but you can make it shorter or longer as needed.

  • Short: 0.2 seconds
  • Medium: 0.3 seconds
  • Long: 0.5 seconds
  • Custom: If none of the previous settings work for you you can customize it by clicking on custom then pressing your finger in the circle on the screen at a length in which you determine you are holding your finger.
Backspace speed

This will alter the speed at which you delete characters on the keyboard.

Touch and hold space bar

This setting will allow additional actions for touching and holding the spacebar.

  • No action: Nothing will happen when you hold the spacebar
  • Cursor control: This will temporarily enable cursor control
  • Voice input: This will enable voice to text
Touch feedback

With touch feedback you can choose a few options for your phones responses to your typing.

  • Sound: Your phone will make sound while texting
  • Vibrate: Your phone will vibrate while texting
  • Character preview: You will be shown character previews (pop ups of the characters you click on)
Speak keyboard input aloud

This will allow your phone to say each character, word, or both characters and words aloud as you type them. You can also allow your phone to repeat deleted characters or spell words and characters out phonetically instead of the alphabet letter name.

Keep symbol panel open

This will keep the symbol panel open after you click and hold on the period key and click on a symbol instead of reverting back to the Qwerty keyboard.

Select third party content to use

From here you can get relevant content as you use the Samsung Keyboard based on the content you select from this setting. Note: Options may change depending on apps

  • Bitmoji
  • Mojitok
  • Giphy and Tenor
  • Spotify
  • Google
  • Grammarly

Reset to default settings

If you want to reset the changes you’ve made or you’re having issues with the keyboard and don’t know what you did, you may want to reset the keyboard settings back to default and start over.
