Text To Speech Settings

Preferred Engine

You have two options from this setting:

  • Samsung text-to-speech engine
  • Speech Services by Google

You can also choose the language, the speech rate, and the pitch of the text-to-speech voice.

If you click the gear icon next to the preferred engine setting you will be given the following options:

  • Install Voice Data
    • You can install new voice data and choose the dialect and gender of the text-to-speech setting.
  • Use Wi-Fi Only
    • When this is on, you can download voice data using only Wi-Fi. This is a preferred option if you have a limited data plan. If you have unlimited data then the only benefit to using this is if your Wi-Fi is faster than your cellular data at your current location. If you are unsure, check with your wireless carrier for more details.
  • Amplify Speech Volume
    • This will make spoken content louder than normal so you can hear it over other audio that may be playing. Also see Audio Ducking in the TalkBack settings if this is a concern.
  • Language Detection
  • Anonymous Usage Reports
  • Feedback
  • Open Source Licenses
    • I wouldn’t worry about this section too much unless you’re a developer.
