Parental Controls

If you would like to monitor and restrict your child’s app/phone usage, you can set up Parental controls through Google’s Family Link app. Once Parental Controls is set up, you can prevent them from accessing/viewing certain apps and also keep watch on how often they use their device and what for.

  • Go to Settings > Digital Wellbeing and parental controls.

  • Click on Parental controls > Get started.

  • Select whether you want to set up controls for a Child, Teen, or Parent, depending on who’s using the device. In this case, click on Parent.

  • Then click Get Family Link and install Google Family Link for parents.

  • If you don’t already have Google Family Link for parents installed go ahead and do that. After downloading click Open to review the information, then hit Get started.

  • Then select which Google account to add to your device if more than one.

  • Then you want to choose who will be using the device: Parent or Child or teen. For this example, Click on Parent.

  • You need to have the device you intend to supervise nearby, then click on Next. Read the information, then hit I’m ready.

  • Select Yes or No depending if your child has a Google account if they don’t you can create one through Gmail. For this example, click on Yes.

  • Then click Next to set up your child’s device.

  • On your child’s device, download Google Family Link for children & teens, and then enter the provided Family Link setup code.

  • Follow the prompts and instructions on both devices to complete the connection between both devices.

  • After you have completed the set up, you can open the Family Link app to view and track everything. If you need further instruction on how to use some of the additional features click Need Help? located in the bottom right.

If you ever decide to add another child, open the app, and then click on Add (the plus sign) in the top right corner. From here, you can rinse and repeat the previous steps listed above.

Note: Until your child is at least 13 years old you cannot stop supervising their account. Google may still automatically limit access restricted content that is age appropriate on their services.

  • On the parents Smartphone, open the Google Family Link app.

  • Click on the child’s account that you no longer wish to supervise.

  • Click on Manage in Settings, then click on Account info.

  • Then click on Stop supervision and continue through the prompts and instructions to confirm that you understand the terms of no longer supervising your child’s access.
  • Then click on Stop supervision and continue through the instructions on the screen.
