Language & Input

Preferred Language

Languages

From here you can select your language preference for everything in your phone. You can also add a language if you prefer to toggle between more than one language.

App Languages

If you prefer to have specific languages for each individual app you can select an app from the list or to find an app that you would like to change the language for, tap on the Search Icon (the piece of paper with the magnifying glass) in the top right corner of this screen. By default each app will use the system language you’ve chosen above unless you manually change the language for an app.

Keyboards

On-Screen Keyboard

These will be the keyboards you use to type in any text box from messages to apps and the internet.

Google Voice Typing

From this screen you will be given the following options:

  • Block Offensive Words
    • This will block out any words that your keyboard views as offensive (bad words).
  • Voice Typing Language
    • Languages
      • You can tap on languages to choose from a variety of voice to text languages you would like to use.
    • Primary Language
      • If you only have one system language this will not be an option. If you have multiple languages you can choose a primary language you use the most.
  • Offline Speech
    • Add A Language
      • From here you can add another language.
    • Auto Update Languages
      • This will update languages on Wi-Fi.
  • Downloaded Languages
    • This will show all downloaded languages.

Physical Keyboard

Keyboard Assistance

Use On-Screen Keyboard

This will make your on-screen keyboard show up on the screen even while you’re using a physical keyboard.

Keyboard Shortcuts

This will show all of the shortcuts you can use to navigate and open apps with a physical keyboard.

Speech

Voice Input

Tap on Voice input and you will see all available voice input options. By default you will only see Speech Services By Google.

Voice Input Settings

To access Voice Input Settings, tap on the Settings Icon (the gear icon) to the right of where it says Voice Input and you will see the following options:

  • Add A Language
    • From here you can add another language for speech services.
  • Auto Update Languages
    • This will update languages on Wi-Fi.
  • Advanced
    • From here you can see your downloaded languages.

Tools

Spell Checker

Spell Checker will fix spelling mistakes in your texts and voice to text. To turn Spell Checker on, turn on the switch to the right of where it says Use Spell Checker.

Languages

From here you can use languages that you want spell checker to fix.

Default Spell Checker

The default spell checker will be Gboard Spell Checker unless you have a different spell checker or keyboard installed.

Default Spell Checker Settings
  • Look Up Contact Names
    • Spell checker will use the first and last names from your contacts list to correct spelling mistakes for names or adapt to how your spell contacts names and nicknames.
  • Grammar Check
    • This will mark grammatical errors with blue underlines while you’re typing.

Personal Dictionary

Your personal dictionary will allow you to add words of your choice so your keyboard will know not to auto-correct them when you type them in. These could be words that you purposely choose to spell differently or uncommon slang.

  • To add a word to your personal dictionary go to Dictionary > Personal Dictionary then select your Language and select the Add Icon in the top right corner of the screen.
  • From here you can type in the word and a shortcut for the word.
  • Tap on the Blue Check Mark in the bottom right hand corner when you’re done.

Pointer Speed

Using the slider, choose how fast you would like the speed of your pointer to be.
