Camera – iPhone

The Camera on iPhones have the ability to take photos that look like you computer desktop background (in a good way). Especially with the pro series of the newer models that have the three camera lens’s, the photos that iPhones have the capacity to take is phenomenal to say the least.

To access the Camera App on iPhone you can tap on the app to open it from the home screen, search for it in the search bar or app library, access your camera from the Control Center, or you can Ask Siri.

Take a Photo/Video

To take a photo, simply press the Shutter Button (The white circle at the bottom middle of the camera app screen), or you can press either volume up or volume down to take a photo.

To take a video, press the Shutter Button to initiate the video then click it again to end the video.

Camera Modes

The Camera App on iPhone comes with a variety of modes you can use to take incredible photos and videos with a vast amount of settings within those modes to enhance any moment you’d like to capture.

Photo Mode

Photo mode is the standard camera mode in the Camera App. You will have the following options when taking a photo to customize before you take your photo.

  • To customize the features in Photo Mode, click on the arrow in the top middle part of the Camera App Screen.
  • Then you should see a list of options appear right above the Shutter button.
Zoom

To zoom in and out with your camera, pinch the screen with your pointer finger and your thumb to zoom out or to zoom in do the exact opposite and pull your two fingers apart while touching the screen. You can also choose zoom options above the shutter button (0.5x, 1, 2x, 3x).

Flash

You will see the Flash Icon (the lightning bolt) in the top left corner of the screen or it will also be the first option in a line of features above the shutter Icon after you click the arrow at the top of the screen.

  • When the Flash Icon is Yellow it is On.
  • When the flash icon is black with a line through is then it’s Off
  • You can also set the flash to Auto and your iPhone camera will use the flash if it thinks it needs to.
Night Mode

Night Mode on iPhone will allow your iPhones camera to detect low light environments when you’re taking a photo. Unlike the Flash that blasts a flashlight in the picture, Night Mode with subtly adjust the lighting in a photo to get a clear shot in a low light photo.

  • You can turn on Night Mode by tapping on the icon in the top left corner of the screen next to the flash icon
  • Or you can access Night Mode after clicking the arrow at the top of the screen and adjusting the setting after it appears above the shutter button.
  • Night mode could work instantly or it could take up to 30 seconds to capture the photo depending on the lighting.
Live Photo

Live photos are like Harry Potter news papers. It’s essentially a very short and quick video.

  • The Live Photos Icon is in the top right corner of the screen. When it’s off there will be a diagonal line through the Icon. When it’s on there will be no line.
  • You can also adjust live photos to On, Off, or Auto from the settings above the Shutter Button.
Photographic Styles

Your iPhones Camera is automatically set to a Standard photographic style setting which creates a balanced photo.

  • To see the options for photographic styles click on the arrow at the top of the screen and select the Photographic Styles Icon (looks like three 2 dimensional squares) to the right of the live photos Icon.

You have a few options to adjust the Photographic Style:

  • Standard
  • Rich Contrast
  • Vibrant
  • Warm
  • Cool

You can also adjust each photographic style individually as needed.

Photo Dimensions

To the right of Photographic Styles you will see an Icon that looks like (4:3). This alters the photo’s dimensions and you can change it to:

  • 4:3
  • Square (1:1)
  • 16:9
Exposure
  • To adjust the exposure, tap on the screen while you’re setting up your phone to take a photo, preferably on the focal point of the photo (the object or area you want to emphasize) and a square yellow box should appear.
  • Then drag the sun icon to the right of the yellow box up or down to adjust the exposure.
  • You can also adjust the exposure by clicking on the arrow at the top of the screen and tapping on the exposure icon (It’s a circle with a plus sign on top of a minus sign).
Timer

You may want to set a timer for a photo to be taken in situations where you may want to take a group photo but you don’t want anyone to be left out of the picture.

  • To the right of the exposure setting you will see the Timer Icon.
  • Click on the Timer Icon then select either 3 seconds or 10 seconds depending on how much time you think you’ll need before your iPhone takes a photo.
Filters

If you want to add a filter to your photo before you take a picture:

  • Click on the arrow at the top of the camera app screen to show the settings above the Shutter Button.
  • Then scroll to the far right and click on the Filter Icon (three rings).
  • Then select a filter to use in your photo.
