Notifications – Samsung

To view your notifications, swipe down from the top of your phone’s screen. Notifications will be displayed under the Quick settings panel.

  • To open a notification, tap it.

  • To clear all notifications, tap Clear.

  • To close the Notification panel, swipe up or tap Back.

  • To customize your notifications, tap Notification settings at the bottom of the panel. Tap More to edit which apps you will receive notifications from.

Notification Pop-up Style

Prioritize and streamline app alerts by changing which apps send notifications and how notifications alert you. To find this, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick settings panel, and then tap the Settings icon. Tap Notifications, and then select a pop-up style. You can choose Brief or Detailed, and then customize the notifications as desired.

Included Apps

Notifications for selected apps will be shown as brief. From here, switch off the apps you don’t want to get notifications from.

Brief Pop up Settings

Brief pop-up settings can be customized when you get a notification.

  • Edge lighting style: With edge lighting style you can make the edges of your phone light up different colors when you get a notification and add features such as fireworks, hearts, etc. around the message bubble you get when a notification pops up.
  • Color by keyword: You can add keywords with this setting that will light up when certain names or phrases pop up on your notifications.
  • Show even while screen is off: With this on, the effects you have customized will still show even when your phone is locked with the screen off.

Recently Sent

View a list of apps that have sent notifications. To find this, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick settings panel, and then tap the Settings icon. Tap Notifications, and then tap your desired option under Recently sent. You can also tap More to expand the list. From here, you can customize the notification settings as needed.

Do Not Disturb

Turn on/off Do Not Disturb

Open the Quick settings panel by swiping down from the top of the screen. Swipe to and tap the Do not disturb icon to turn it on or off.

You can also go to Settings, then search for and select Do not disturb. Tap the switch next to Do not disturb to turn it on or off.

For How Long?

This will allow you to customize the time that Do Not Disturb is on.

  • Until I turn it off: Keeps do not disturb on until you’re ready to be disturbed again.
  • Set a Limit: If you know you’re going to be in a 2 hour meeting, for example, you can set do not disturb to be on for only two hours or whatever time you need it on for.
  • Ask every time: Every time you turn on do not disturb your phone will ask you to set a time limit.

Schedule for Do Not Disturb

You can also set multiple schedules for Do not disturb to automatically activate, so you can make sure notifications won’t interrupt important meetings, or disturb your sleep.

  1. Open the Quick settings panel by swiping down from the top of the screen. 

  2. Touch and hold the Do not disturb icon to open up its settings menu.

  3. From here, you can add a schedule. Just tap Add schedule. On some devices, you may have to tap Turn on as scheduled instead, and then tap Add (the plus sign) in the top right corner.

  4. Enter a title and your desired preferences, and then tap Save.

  5. Tap the switch next to your new schedule to turn it on or off.

  6. Repeat the process as many times as needed, so you won’t be disturbed during the times you need to focus.

Exceptions

When you want to turn on Do not disturb mode to concentrate but are expecting an important call, you can allow exceptions and customize what alerts you receive.

  1. Open the Quick settings panel by swiping down from the top of the screen.

  2. Touch and hold the Do not disturb icon to open up its settings.

  3. Swipe to the Exceptions section, and then select from the displayed options.

      • Calls, messages, and conversations:

        Allow calls and messages from any contact, favorite contacts, or anyone to bypass Do not disturb.

        You can also allow repeated calls through.

      • Alarms and sounds:

        Alarms and media sounds are enabled by default, but you can also choose to allow touch sounds, calendar events, and reminders though.

      • Apps:

        You can select specific apps that will be able to notify you when Do not disturb is enabled.

Hide Notifications

  • Hide all:

    All notifications that are not subject to an exception will be hidden.

  • When the screen is off:

    Full screen notifications, like phone calls, can be disabled.

  • When the screen is on:

    You can prevent notifications from appearing as icon badges, in the notification panel, in the status bar, and in pop-ups.

Advanced Settings

Status Bar

If a bunch of notifications are clogging up your status bar, you can hide them all or only show a couple.

  1. Navigate to and open Settings, and then tap Notifications.

  2. Tap Advanced settings

  3. Tap Show notification icons, and then adjust your desired settings. For example, you can choose to show all notifications, your three most recent notifications, or so on.

Show Battery Percentage

In the top right hand corner of the phone it shows the battery icon and next to it will be the current percentage of battery you have left. Toggle off to remove the percentage

Notification History

Have you ever accidentally closed a notification you were trying to read? With the Notification history feature on your Galaxy phone, you can view your recent notifications exactly as they appeared.

  1. Navigate to and open Settings on your phone.

  2. Tap Notifications, and then tap Advanced settings.

  3. Tap Notification history, and then tap the switch at the top of the page. Your notification history will appear here from now on.

  4. If you don’t currently see anything on this page, come back later after you’ve received some new notifications.

Conversations

Here is where you can find all of your modified conversations which you can customize in your message settings or in the conversation straight from the messaging app.

Floating Notifications

With floating notifications, you can either activate Bubbles –  which will allows compatible conversations to be displayed in Bubble view. Alternatively, you can also choose Smart pop-up view – this will allow you to select from a range of apps to appear as a bubble but can also be expanded to Smart pop-up view.

Suggest actions and replies for notifications

You can ask your phone to offer suggestions when checking your notifications. This makes checking them easier if you’d like to perform an action without opening the app.

  1. To turn this on, navigate to and open Settings, and then tap Notifications.

  2. Tap Advanced settings.

  3. Tap the switch next to “Suggest actions and replies for notifications.”

Show Snooze Button

If you need to temporarily silence notifications or save them for later, you can set up a snooze option.

You can turn this setting on and off from the advanced notification tab in notification settings or you can swipe down from the top of your screen to open the panel. Then, swipe your desired notification to the left or right. Tap the Snooze icon (it looks like a bell), and then choose your desired option, such as 15 minutes or 1 hour. Tap Save.

Note: The Snooze option may not be available on all software versions.

Notification Reminders

Notification reminder is an accessibility setting that will play a notification sound every 5 minutes. If you keep getting notifications but no new notifications are coming in then you might want to check if this setting is turned on.

App Icon Badges

App icon badges are the little red/orange dots (depending on your colorblindness) that appear next to your apps when they receive a notification. You can adjust whether your apps display App icon badges or not.

  1. Navigate to and open Settings, tap Notifications, and then tap Advanced settings.

  2. Tap App icon badges, and then tap the switch at the top to turn the badges on or off.

Wireless Emergency Alerts

Emergency alerts are messages sent by public services to alert you of dangerous weather, missing persons, or other matters of local or national importance. If desired, you can customize which emergency alerts you receive and disable ones you don’t want, except for National alerts.

To adjust these alerts, navigate to and open Settings, and then tap Notifications. Tap Advanced settings, and then tap Wireless emergency alerts. The following options are available but may differ depending on your carrier:

  • National alerts: National warning messages issued by the national government. These alerts cannot be turned off.

  • Extreme threats: Extreme threats to life and property, such as a flash flood or hurricane. 

  • Severe threats: Severe threats to life and property. Considered slightly less dangerous than extreme threats.

  • AMBER alerts: Child abduction emergency bulletins. 

  • Public safety messages: Recommended actions that can save lives or property.

  • Test alerts: Carrier tests and scheduled tests from the safety alert system. This may be called “State and local tests” on certain carriers.

Alert Preferences
  • Vibration
    • This will turn on Vibration when you receive an emergency alert.
  • Alert Reminder
    • You can choose to be reminded of an emergency alert:
      • Once
      • Every 2 minutes
      • Every 15 minutes
      • Never
  • Speak Alert Message
    • You can utilize the Text-To-Speech feature so your phone will speak wireless emergency alerts aloud.

If you are not receiving emergency alerts on your phone, it could be due to the following reasons:

    • Your phone has poor cell reception.

    • Airplane mode is enabled on your phone or emergency alerts are turned off.

    • Some phones will not show an alert when you’re in the middle of a phone call. This varies by make and model.

    • Your phone is connected to a cell site that is not broadcasting the alert, is undergoing maintenance, or is out of service.

Note: If your phone receives the same emergency alert over and over, try powering it off and turning it back on.
