Messages

This article will focus on the Messaging Apps features and settings. There will be some keyboard features discussed in relation to the Messages specifically bu if you want to learn more about the Samsung Keyboard that you use in the messaging app to type out and send text messages click on the link.

Conversations

To view conversations in the Messages App, tap on the tab at the bottom left side of the Messages App screen that says Conversations. From here you will have the following options:

New Conversation

  • To start a new conversation, open the Messages App and tap on the New Message Icon (blue message bubble with a small plus sign).
  • Then type in the recipient at the top of the screen.
  • You can type in a phone number or you can tap on the Plus Sign (+) to the right of the recipient line and search your contact list to start a new conversation with a contact.
  • Then type out your message in the text box and send it.

Conversation Categories

If you want to add a new category from the conversation screen, tap on the Plus Sign (+) next to the All tab at the top of the conversations list. You can also tap on All to view all conversations.

More Message Conversation Options

To access more conversation features, tap on the More Options Icon (the three vertical dots) above the conversations list next to the search icon. From here you will see a list of the following options:

  • Delete
    • Tap on Delete then select a conversation you want to delete and tap on the Trashcan Icon at the bottom of the screen.
    • You can also tap on the All bubble to select all conversations if you want to delete everything.
  • Edit Categories
    • From here you can turn Conversation Categories on to organize your conversations and add new categories if needed.
  • Starred Messages
    • From here you can view any starred messages. To Star a message, tap and hold a message and select Star Message from the drop down.
  • Trash
    • Tap on trash to view any deleted messages or conversations. If you have the Trash setting on, deleted messages will remain in the trash bin for 30 days.
  • Quick Responses
    • From here you can View, Add, or Delete Quick Responses by going to the Messages App > More Conversation Options (the three vertical dots) > Quick Responses.

Message Features In a Conversation

Message Attachment Features

When you’re typing a text message tap on the Plus Icon (+) to the left of the text box will bring up a menu of the following options:

  • Quick Response
    • If you tap on Quick Response, you will see a list of preset typed out responses you can use if you want to respond but are too busy to type out a full message such as “Sorry, I missed your call”, “Whats up?”, “I’m running late but I’ll be there soon”.
    • To add quick responses see Quick Responses.
  • Schedule Message
    • With scheduled messages you can type out a message to someone and schedule a time for it to be sent. This could be extremely helpful if you’re working with a patient or a client for example and you want to schedule a text reminder for a meeting or appointment.
  • Location
    • This feature will allow you to share your location with someone via the Messages App.
      • Tap on location
      • Then tap on done when you’re finished and send the message.
  • Image
    • Once you tap on Image you will be taken to a screen where you can select a photo from your Gallery, My Files, or other photo/video storage apps on your device. Find the photo you want to send and send the message.
  • Samsung Notes
    • If you would like to share notes with someone from your Samsung Notes App, tap on Samsung Notes and select which notes you would like to message the recipient.
  • Video
    • Once you tap on video you will be taken to a screen where you can select a video from your Gallery, My Files, or other photo/video storage apps on your device. Find the video you want to send and send the message.
  • Audio
    • This will take you to your internal storage and other cloud storage apps so you can select an audio recording to send to a recipient.
  • Contacts
    • This will take you to your Contacts App where you can select a contact card to send in a message.
  • Calendar
    • This will take you to the Calendar App so you can send an event to someone.
  • Camera
    • To the left of the text box on your keyboard in the Messages app you will see a Camera Icon. Tapping on this icon will open your Camera App so you can immediately take a picture and send it to a recipient.
  • Gallery
    • To the left of the Camera Icon in the text box you will see the Gallery Icon. If you tap on this you will be taken to your photo gallery to select a photo to send in a message.

More Message Options

If you tap on the More Icon (the three vertical dots) You will see a list of the following Messages App features:

  • Delete Messages
    • To delete messages tap on Delete Messages and then select each individual message you want deleted or tap on All in the top left hand corner if you want to delete all of the messages within a message thread or group message thread.
  • Search Messages
    • From here you can type in specific word, phrases, or anything you remember from a text message you want to find 
  • Notification Sound
    • From here you can set specific notification sound for a contact or a group of contacts.
  • Category
    • You can add a category for messages and group messages to better help you organize your conversations.
  • Customize Chat Room
    • If you want to change the color theme and background for a message thread with a person or a group you can do that from here. You can select to apply these changes to every chat room or you can customize each one separately.
  • Shared Attachments
    • You can view any attachments you’ve shared throughout the history of a message thread from here.

Contacts

You can also view your Contacts by tapping on the Contacts Tab at the bottom right corner of the screen and start new messages directly from your contacts.
