iPhone is Frozen, Glitchy, Running slow

iPhones can sometimes have issues with running slow or freezing and it could be a number of things that prevent your iPhone from working properly in this scenario. We’ll go over a few of the common fixes for these issues in this article.

Soft Reset

If your iPhone is running slow, glitchy, or the screen is frozen the typical fix is restarting the phone. I’m not talking about simply pushing power off and dragging the slider on the phone to turn it off which you can do to restart the phone but if your phone is frozen then you won’t be able to do that anyway but if it’s running slow I would still recommend a soft reset. To do this you want to do this button sequence in order:

  • On an iPhone with no home button
    • Press (do not hold) Volume up, Volume down, then hold the power button until your iPhone screen goes black and turns back on. Once you see the Apple symbol on the phone you can then release the power button. Again if you do this don’t drag the slider to turn it off. Continue to hold the power button until the phone shuts off.
  • On an iPhone with a home button
    • Hold the power button and the home button until your iPhone screen goes black and turns back on. Once you see the Apple symbol on the phone you can then release the power button. Again if you do this don’t drag the slider to turn it off. Continue to hold the power button until the phone shuts off.

If Your iPhone still has a frozen screen after this then you might want to take it to your local repair center or wireless store to see if a tech can run diagnostics on the phone but a soft reset/force restart will usually fix that issue.

iPhone Is Glitchy Or Running Slow

A soft reset/force restart will sometimes fix your iPhone if it’s glitchy or running slower than usual but there could be other issues causing your iPhone to have those problems.

Check Your Network Conditions

Check your Cellular Connection and/or your Wi-Fi Connection. Most apps use a network connection to function properly. If it’s only happening with applications, this could be the issue. If it is slow or glitchy while navigating through the phone without using apps then it could be something else.

Software Update

If your iPhone is having glitchy issues or it’s running slower than usual, check to see if your iPhone has a Software Update. If it does, this could be the reason for the lag on your iPhone. The reason is because iPhones come out with software updates to fix bugs, glitches, security patches, allow your iPhone to be compatible with new versions of application software etc. You want to make sure that you regularly check for software updates or simply turn automatic updates on. Your iPhone will typically update overnight while your phone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. If you don’t have Wi-Fi you can still update your iPhone using cellular data. This will use up data on your iPhone so make sure that you have an unlimited data plan with your wireless carrier. You could also go somewhere that has Wi-Fi to update your iPhone if the former is not an option.

Check Your iPhone Storage

Your iPhone could be running slow because your iPhone storage is full or getting really close. Your iPhone also uses storage to store software updates so if you don’t have enough storage then your iPhone can’t be updated. You have a few options to clear up your iPhone storage. For more info see, iPhone Storage.

Check Low Power Mode

Low power mode is a great feature on iPhone that will preserve your battery life and make your iPhone last much longer than usual. However, this could be the reason why your iPhone is running slower than normal as it diminishes the use and speed of some features. For more on Low Power Mode click on the link.

Close Out Unused Apps

iPhone is usually pretty good at running multiple apps in the background however if too many apps are competing for space it can limit the speed at which your iPhone operates. Close out all your apps to see if this helps the issue.
