How to Use Guided Access on iPhone

Guided Access is a helpful feature on iPhone that can help you stay focused on a task by temporarily restricting your phone to a single app and allowing you to control which app features are available. Here are the steps to set up and use Guided Access on your iPhone.

  1. Set Up Guided Access: To turn on Guided Access, go to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access and toggle it on. You can also adjust the following settings:
  • Passcode Settings: Set up a passcode to end the Guided Access session. You can also use Face ID (on an iPhone with Face ID) or Touch ID (on an iPhone with a Home button) to end a session.
  • Time Limits: Play a sound or speak the time remaining before the session ends.
  • Accessibility Shortcut: Turn the shortcut on or off during Guided Access sessions.
  • Display Auto-Lock: Set how long it takes iPhone to automatically lock during a Guided Access session.
  1. Start a Guided Access Session: To start a session, open the app you want to use and triple-click the Home button (on an iPhone with a Home button) or the side button (on an iPhone with Face ID) to activate Guided Access. Then, circle any areas of the screen you want to disable, adjust the size of the mask, and turn on or off any of the following features:
  • Sleep/Wake Button: Disable the iPhone hardware buttons.
  • Volume Buttons: Disable the volume buttons.
  • Motion: Prevent the iPhone from switching from portrait to landscape or from responding to other motions.
  • Keyboards: Disable the keyboard.
  • Touch: Disable areas of the screen that aren’t relevant to the task or where an accidental gesture might cause a distraction.
  • Time Limit: Set a time limit for the session.

Finally, click Start to begin the session.

  1. End a Guided Access Session: To end a session, double-click the Home button (on an iPhone with a Home button) or the side button (on an iPhone with Face ID) and enter your passcode (or use Face ID or Touch ID if enabled). You can also end the session by triple-clicking the Home button or the side button and entering the passcode.

Use Cases

Guided Access is helpful in many situations, such as when you want to limit a child’s screen time or focus on a specific task without being distracted by other apps on your phone. It can also be used to prevent accidental touches or gestures that might interfere with an important task or activity.

      You can also turn on Face ID (on an iPhone with Face ID) or Touch ID (on an iPhone with a Home button) as a way to end a Guided Access session.

    • Time Limits
    • Play a sound or speak the time remaining before a Guided Access session ends.

    • Accessibility Shortcut
    • Turn the shortcut on or off during Guided Access sessions.

    • Display Auto-Lock
    • Set how long it takes iPhone to automatically lock during a Guided Access session.

Start a Guided Access session

  • Open the app you want to use.

  • Turn on Guided Access using Accessibility Shortcuts.

  • Circle any areas of the screen you want to disable. Drag the mask into position or use the handles to adjust its size.

  • Click on Options, then turn on or off any of the following:

    • Sleep/Wake Button

    • Volume Buttons

    • Motion (to prevent iPhone from switching from portrait to landscape or from responding to other motions)

    • Keyboards

    • Touch

    • Time Limit

  • Then click Start.

End a Guided Access session

  • On an iPhone with Face ID
  • Double-click the side button, then unlock with Face ID (if enabled). Or triple-click the side button, then enter the Guided Access passcode.

  • On an iPhone with a Home button
  • Double-click the Home button, then unlock with Touch ID (if enabled). Or triple-click the Home button, then enter the Guided Access passcode.
